Enteógeno é um termo grego composto por duas palavras ἔνθεος (éntheos) e γενέσθαι (genésthai) traduzido como “inspirado pelo divino”. Refere-se a determinadas bebidas ou preparados à base de plantas ou fungos utilizados em contextos rituais sagrados que visam a expansão da consciência. São consideradas substâncias enteógenas: Ayahuasca (Daime, Yage), cogumelos mágicos (psilocybe cubensis, panaeolus, amanita muscaria), São Pedro (Wuachuma), Jurema Preta, Cannabis, Peyote, entre outras.
A escolha da palavra enteógeno não é um acidente. Ela surge justamente da tentativa de evitar o reducionismo materialista presente em outros termos usados pela ciência moderna, que excluem a camada fundamental de sentido por trás do uso dessas substâncias, resumindo-as à meras listas de descrição sobre seus efeitos no corpo físico. Quando usamos a palavra enteógeno estamos considerando a natureza profundamente espiritual da consagração dessas substâncias, intimamente enraizadas em diversas culturas de inúmeras tradições espirituais seculares da humanidade.
